Gelit/Win32 2.05 History and Whatsnew ----------------------------------------------------- German version in watisneu.txt! 2.06.001 Beta (06.06.2000) Beta release. May contain program bugs. Import filter The DULM importfilter has been updated as it did not clear all non-needed fields on some records. Browse window The algorithm behind the design with the alternate color for each second row has been optimized; it is now faster in conjunction with scroll mice. Print When you tried to set the page borders in the print setup dialogue, the label designer instead of the page border setup dialogue had been displayed. The printing of labels has been implemented. You can print to any user-defined label formats. If a text does not fit onto a label, the non-fitting part of the text is discarded. In the tools submenu there is a label designer available; the filemanager of Gelit is responsible for file handling. Query The descriptions for the fields "created by" and "created (date)" were exchanged. 2.05.003 (04.05.2000, official release) Deletion of old email account I will give up my old compuserve email account known as gelit@compuserve.com or 101714.2552@compuserve.com Please use the email account gebers@gelit.de instead to contact the author. Browse window The grid in the browse window has been updated: now every second row is drawn in an alternate color so that the grid provides a clearer view. You can adapt or disable this feature with the popup menue of the browse window. Import filters The import filters for text files have been rewritten from scratch. All text file based import filters can now handle files from UNIX or MacOS systems as well as HTML files. An import filter for DULM has been created. DULM3-Support Gelit now provides a function to expor records to DULM 3 which is a macro packet for MS Word97 and higher. It handles all bibliographic items in a word document. Please read the online help for further details. 2.04.006 (13.02.2000) Import filters: The "Refer (Endnote)" import filter has been updated. 2.04.005 (20.01.2000) Tools: Edit lookup tables This dialogue has been extended. You now can export lookup table items into a text (.TXT) or an wordprocessor (.RTF) file. With this export function all _visible_ records in the dialogue will be exported. In the case you limited the ammount of records by a filter, only the records which match to the filter will be exported. Import Filters A new import filter is available for a program called "WinLiteratur Pro". The filter is capable to read the DBASE3 export files. Some other import filters (those which handle text files) have been extended so that they can read text files which have been created on UNIX or MAC systems. These text files made problems as they don't have the DOS/Windows specific #13#10 as a line-end tag, but a single character (#13 or #10). 2.04.004 (12.09.1999) Browse window layout Gelit had a bug in the new browse window layout in conjunction with the quick search field: Once you were in the quick search field, it was impossible to get back into the current browse window using the mouse. The new browse window layout had also a bug which lead into non-working function keys F1-F7 when the program's focus was on the quick search field. Read-Only-Mode The Read-Only-Mode has been updated. It is now possible that the user "Administrator" can do administrative tasks in a Read-Only version of Gelit. 2.04.001 (04th April 1999) Browse window layout Gelit had some problems when running with the new browse window layout.[fixed] If you update an existing release of Gelit, the new layout will automatically be activated. Read the section of release 2.03.019 for details on the new layout. Query The query module has completely been rewritten. The QBE query interface has been replaced by a self-written, high-optimizing search routine. Changes: a) in several cases a speed up of the query process b) operator 'NOT' available. You can use it as an extension for all other query modes (e.g. equal -> not equal). c) all theoretically possible query trees should produce correct results now. The elder releases of Gelit had problems with some constructions (query mode 'contains' on AND-connected keywords). d) The query mode 'like' has been replaced with the query mode 'ends with'. e) Gelit now can handle databases which have umlauts in their file name. The query interface had problems when you set up your display driver for large fonts. [fixed] Additional tool In the 'Tools' submenu you will find a new function 'Repair index file'. You can repair Gelit databases you cannot open because Gelit claims an index error or a missing index. Homepage Gelit has an additional internet adress: http://www.gelit.de On the updated homepage you can find a forum where you can discuss with other users and myself about Gelit. 2.03.019 File management Gelit had some problems when the path to the temporary files pointed to a UNC network directory. File management/Network use From now on Gelit creates a '.description' file for each database file. In this file is the description which shows up in the file manager for the specific file. Gelit will create or overwrite the .description file of a specific database when - you create a new database - you embed a database into a Gelit client - you edit a link to a database within a Gelit client. Gelit will read out the content of this file each time you - want to embed a database into a Gelit client - want to edit a link to a database within a Gelit client. Please keep in mind that any user may change the content of the .description file. To avoid this, you may restrict the file access to .description files to 'read only'. Gelit startup Gelit can open databases for browseing at its startup. You can specify the databases within the command line of Gelit (usually you do this by editing the link to gelit2.exe). Databases are identified by their number in the file manager of Gelit, which is given by the order of the files. The command line c:\gelit32\gelit2.exe 1 2 23 will open the databases 1, 2 and 23. If Gelit cannot open a database, it displays an error message and tries to open all other specified databases anyway. If Gelit detects that a number in the command line is higher than the number of currently available databases, it simply ignores the specification. Note: If you change the order of the files in the file manager, you may have to change the command line parameters. Browse Window When you hold the SHIFT key while klicking on the button "New", Gelit opens the screen mask with a 1:1 copy of the currently selected record. In the title bar of the screen mask you will find a special hint that this is a copy of an existing record. This function should be used to create duplicates of a record. The hotkey for this function is SHIFT-ENTER. The hotkey CTRL-ENTER still creates a simple new record. Note: You can only save the new record after having changed the content of any field. Browse window layout Until now all browse windows had their own button bar. This made the screen layout of Gelit a bit uncomfortable if you had a lot of open databases. However, from now on you can activate the option 'New layout for browse windows' in the 'Set preferences' dialogue. The new layout implies that all browse windows share a single button bar; the upper bar (including the 'Print' button) can be aligned at the top, left or right of the Gelit main window. You may use the popup menu of the new layout toolbar to change this alignment. By standard this function is deactivated. 2.03.015 File management From now on Gelit is capable of accessing files stored in network sharings with their UNC filenames (which is the standard way to access files in Win32 systems, e.g. \\server\freigabe\datei.dbf). It is no longer neccessary to provide a drive letter like W:\ to sharings where Gelit- based files are located. Printing records The print module had a minor bug in the scientific citation mode. Help file The help file now contains the new online registration data (you can register Gelit now with US$-Cheques, Credit card via Internet or a 1-800 number in the USA). The missing documentation for some import filters has been added. 2.03.014 General When running under Windows NT Workstation, Gelit in a special case caused an exception in ntdll.dll, and it did not start up correctly afterwards once this exception had been raised. Printing Gelit did not initialize the Print dialogue window correctly if you had no printer driver available on your system. From now on you can at least print to the provided file devices if no printer driver is present. 2.03.013 Installation Gelit now stores the diffrent file types it can handle in these directories: \RefData Lookup tables \MainData Main databases (sample data) \pmk Print masks \Documentation Tutorial (german), readme etc. Set preferences... With the prior versions you were able to specify directories for temporary data and the lookup tables. From this release on you can specify the directories for main databases and print masks. Whenever you want to create or open main databases or printmasks, Gelit will switch to the specified directories. This is useful if multiple users in a network environments want to share main databases and print masks. Edit Lookup table items The charmap in the dialogs where you edit lookup table items did not work correctly. The detection of the ammount of used and available fields in these dialogues did not work correctly for the lookup tables of Location, Catalogue/Seal, and Keyword. 2.02.009 Edit lookup table item When editing a lookup table item and changing it into an empty string, Gelit produced a general protection failure. When deleting a lookup table item, Gelit deleted TWO items instead of a single one. Misc Some misspellings have been corrected. 2.02.007 Create new databases Gelit did not ask the user if he really wants to overwrite an existing file. Gelit did not allow to create new databases and printmask filenames longer than 8 characters (sorry, forgotten during the 16bit to 32bit port). Query When saving query trees, the option 'use description stored in file' was mistakenly enabled. You have now a button next to the database list to select 'All databases' as your query base. Query results sometimes contained double records; now all query results get checked for duplicates. Browse When dragging a SINGLE record from one browse window to another, Gelit did not copy the content of first keyword field. Transfer: When copying or moving records from one database to another, it has been quite difficult for novice users to copy/move records into a NEW database. Now there is a button aligned to the target database list you can create a new database with. Printing The print dialogue of Gelit did not remember to which device you printed last when you selected 'html file' as device. When including two author fields in a printmask, BOTH using the scientific citation mode, Gelit increased in both of them the counter for authors: Gebers 1990a: New ways to Chicago. In: Gebers 1990b: The colleciton of.... ^^^^^ Where the ^^^^ are placed should be the text 'Gebers 1990a'. This is now fixed. Registration Added new registration information for those who want to register using their credit card. Misc In the english mode the charmap of the screen mask always provided the standard special characters; user settings were not considered. The unregistered version won't disable the transfer menu in browse / query windows anymore when you have more than the allowed 75 records in a file. Gelit now has an updated splash screen. Updated the supported languages of WinWord with an item 'Word97 (8.0)'. Some of the import filters were improved. Known abnormality: When running the 'print' dialogue of gelit and stepping through the database using the 'next' button, Gelit will never highlight the last record of a database but will ever stay on the record prior to the last one. This is no bug - however, the preview window of the print dialogue DOES show the preview of the last record. This behaviour is caused by the scientific citation mode which is simulated in the preview window. 2.01.006 User interface When running in english mode, some of the controls still contained german captions; this is fixed now. Screen mask The field captions in the screen mask can now be edited by the user. Query interface Well, this bug had not been found since the very first release of Gelit 1.0: Gelit never produced correct query results when you ran a query on two or more keyword fields like here: ... 'Where keyword='CD-ROM' AND keyword='Red Book' Also, when running a query on ORed keywords (like ... 'Where keyword='CD-ROM' OR keyword='Red Book' the result set contained single records more than once (in some special cases). Import filters The MedLine/Medlars import filter has been revised with new sample data. It now works better on MESH/MH and SR fields. When you imported a huge ammount of data into a rather big gelit database, gelit produced an error message and completely failed to import the records. 2.00.029 Internal Release Printing records Gelit did not sort records correctly. Browse/Query windows When you dragged a SINGLE record of a browse/query window onto another browse window, Gelit displayed an error message and did not copy the record. There have been functions added to the "Transfer" menue of browse/query windows: "Mark all records" "Remove selection tags" "Number of selected records" Import wizard The import wizard now can import records in the dbase- subformat of "Reference '97" by Jaco Vorhaam, Brail. Import filters for BibTeX and RIS file format are planned. English help file has been reviewed in some sections. 2.00.028 Bugfix Installation Gelit could not be installed on Windows NT machines as path names are not in capital letters on NT. Printing records You can print records to clipboard now. 2.00.027 Final Release I
